When Should I Send My Wedding Invitations?

I often get asked by clients "when should I send my wedding invitations?" - after all, it's usually their first time planning a wedding. So I've put together a general guide for wedding invitation and save the date timing, ensuring all your guests know about your upcoming celebration and don't end up missing out.

When Should I Send My Save the Dates?

Save the dates should be mailed out 6-9 months prior to your wedding date. It's important to consider other factors about your wedding, in case they affect your decision on when to send your save the dates. This could be something like the location of your wedding, and if it's a destination wedding I would always err on the side of caution, and mail them closer to 12 months prior to your wedding date. This will give your guests ample time to plan and book their travel, which I'm sure they'll appreciate!

When Should I Send My Wedding Invitations?

Your invitations can be sent out much closer to your wedding date, if you've sent save the dates! Usually, wedding invitations are mailed 8-12 weeks prior to the wedding date, as everyone attending and needing to travel will have sorted out their arrangements. This also gives your guests plenty of time to respond, whether that's via a mail-in response card or online.

If you're having a destination wedding, or have a lot of guests travelling in from out of town, you can confidently mail your wedding invitations 16-20 weeks out from your wedding date.

When Should I Start Working with a Wedding Stationery Designer?

Of course it's not much use having all these dates in mind, if you haven't started putting the wheels in motion with your chosen wedding invitation designer! They're usually the first wedding vendor you start working with, and often the first vendor you book making it a very exciting first step towards your wedding day!

The scope of work, preferred printing methods, and other variables will affect when you'll want to start working with a wedding stationer. It also depends on the individual stationery designer, however a general rule of thumb would be to book your wedding stationer 3 months prior to when you'd like to mail out your wedding invitations.
