One of our most-loved wedding invitation designs was for a wedding in Cabo at Hotel San Cristobal. The bride came to me asking for a design that felt a little bit retro, while encapsulating the colors and natural beauty of Cabo and their venue.
In this blog post, I'll breakdown the main elements of the design and my thought process while I was creating these custom wedding invitations.
Designing invitations for a Cabo wedding
Garland and Ronald wanted their Cabo wedding invitations to have a retro feel, but wanted to create a balance so that it didn't feel too much like a 60's themed party (understandable!).
-
Font: I really believe that fonts give design personality. I wanted to make sure I wasn't using anything too 'on-the-nose' like a 60s display font, and instead wanted to find something that felt like a well balanced serif, with soft edges reminiscent of 60s and 70s typography.
-
Shapes: I played with the layering of shapes, which is where I really leant into the 60's feel. Overlaying pill-shaped cards, creating a retro pattern, felt subtle and therefore perfect for the look they were trying to achieve.
-
Icons: Using icons brought the wedding invitation design back to modern day and added a sense of refinement. We foiled the icons, bringing luxury which just felt like the depth they needed.
Color palette for a Cabo wedding
We took inspiration from the iconic pattern in Hotel San Cristobal, along with the colors of Cabo. We looked into the natural tones of the sand and the ocean, along side a rich orange tone and the dusty green found in the pattern.
You'll notice the smallest wedding invitation cards were the ones with the brightest card colors. This helped us create balance, ensuring the invitations had a high-end feel using our favorite uncoated card stocks.
Incorporating the Hotel San Cristobal pattern
We fell in love with the tile pattern in Hotel San Cristobal. It was the perfect finishing touch to Garland and Ronald's wedding invitations, which we used to line the envelopes with.
Printing invitations for a Cabo wedding
We specialize in letterpress and foil wedding invitations at Nicety Studio. Ronald and Garland loved both print techniques for their Cabo wedding, so we used both! Letterpress helps create texture and depth, and that pillowy effect is truly like no other. We used gold foil sparingly and mostly for the icons, adding just the right amount of shine to their day.
We also had a pill-shaped blind debossed border pattern on the main invitation, further enhancing the pattern the cards created when they were stacked up perfectly.
These wedding invitations were die cut, blind debossed, letterpressed, foil stamped, and tied together in a true labor of love. They were one of the turning points in Nicety Studio history, putting us on the map for custom wedding invitation design. (Also - we designed the map for their invitations - a detail that shouldn't be forgotten!).
